From NZZ to JED

JED – which stands for Join, Explore and Dare – is a redevelopment of the «Neue Zürcher Zeitung» (NZZ) printing centre in Schlieren, situated approximately 10 km outside Zurich.

By combining an industrial flair with modern facilities, JED establishes a unique location for creative collaboration, networking and entrepreneurship.

«Our vision was to create a new centre for knowledge transfer, innovation and entrepreneurship. It brings medium-sized and large companies from various sectors together to form a think and work tank. Both the location and the structure of the former NZZ printing centre are ideally suited for this vision,» says Gianfranco Basso, project lead at Swiss Prime Site.

After a 5-year-long reconstruction process, the 36,000 square meter site now provides office spaces, coworking areas, event locations, restaurants, and public areas.

«Our architectural vision has become a reality. We were able to demonstrate how an industrial area can be transformed into an inspiring and human-centred environment for work, knowledge exchange, and leisure,» concludes Stefan Camenzind, executive director at Evolution Design.

Thanks to its amazing room height, natural concrete, wood and steel finishes, and smart function zoning, the main entrance foyer with Jake’s Bar coffee point forms the heart of the entire JED project and provides a spectacular welcome for visitors.

The new mezzanine level, created by inserting a steel gallery on the first-floor level complements the spatial experience and offers further spaces for coworking, team meetings, receptions and other events.

Custom artworks – such as Jake’s wall graphic and a neon lighting sculpture – give the space a truly distinctive appearance.
